When you hear the term “Kevlar” you may immediately think of police vests. This material is often used in bullet proof vests that protect policemen and others who go into highly dangerous situations. However, now motorcycle riders can also take advantage of this incredibly strong and durable material. Kevlar jeans have been created to help protect riders when they’re out on the road, whether they’re just going down to the park or riding hundreds of miles.
What is Kevlar? It’s a special type of fibre that is both flexible and lightweight. It’s actually used for a lot more than clothing – Kevlar has been used in homes, vehicles, and even in spacecraft since its invention in 1965. In fact, Kevlar is used in so many things that you most likely use something that contains Kevlar every day.
Kevlar jeans aren’t actually completely made out of Kevlar. Instead, most of made from very durable jean fabric but feature Kevlar reinforcements. Usually, these reinforcements are in areas like the thighs and the knees. They’re designed to help keep your skin safe whenever you take a tumble off your motorcycle, so the Kevlar is placed on the area’s most likely to come into contact with the asphalt. Some jeans feature the Kevlar pads sewn into the pants, but others allow you to take out the pads if you want to make the jeans more comfortable when wearing them off the bike. Still others have optional pockets where you can add extra padding, like extra kneepads.
While you don’t have to have Kevlar jeans to ride a motorcycle, they are certainly a great choice for anyone who rides often. The additional protection they give you simply can’t be ignored. While no one wants to have an accident, they do happen, and having Kevlar jeans on can mean the difference between very painful injuries and only a few scratches.
